Now that the fascists have come for you… By SHAMS KABIR

1984 riots killed thousands of Sikhs. Operation Blue Star killed hundreds.
1985 Gujarat riots killed hundreds and displaced tens of thousands
1986 Nayantara Sahgal receives her award. Operation Black Thunder kills again. The Gujarat riots continue till February.
2014 Killing of minorities continues unabated. Muslim lynchings commence June 2014. Authors are now killed.
2015 Nayantara Sahgal returns her award. So do a host of other authors.
Now, these are writers. They could have changed the narrative anytime. Like they are doing now.
They say now that things have got too far we cannot take it anymore. Were things not always a bit off the charts? The communalism, the heavy hand of the state, the crime, et al.
They were in 1986 for sure.
Dear authors, you let the situation fester. They have been coming to get everybody since ages.
Now you speak up because they have come to get you.
I am reminded of Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) who was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.
Niemöller is perhaps best remembered for the quotation:
‘First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak for me’
Now you want our support I guess. Many of us are dead. But never matter, we will support you.
